Toluene is a strong aromatic transparent solvent.
Description
It is either extracted during the petrol refinery process, or is produced in ethylene crackers as a coproduct; alternatively it can be extracted from benzol produced in coking plants.
Examples of applications
Toluene is primarily used in the hydrodealkylation process for benzene production. It is also used to produce toluene diisocyanate – a major constituent of polyurethane foam. It is found in paints and technical varnishes. Toluene is also blended with petrol to increase octane number ratings.
